Crux Of Matter
2009, rope, earth, metal platform, undocumented field laborers, performance spectacle
Crux of Matter engages migratory farm labor, posing it as an elevated and ritualized activity synonamous with performance art and crafting. Invited audiences observed the banal practice of hop tying while engaging in reverent aplause and gratitude. This reversed hierarchy mitigated the oft seen low prestige of blue-collar sweat labor, elevating the work of the hand and human effort. Seen through this lens likened the performance to a Jean-Francious Millet Harvest painting.
